Pelican Island National fauna Refuge is a United States National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), and part of the slowly moving water Headwaters NWR composite, situated just off the western foreshore of North Hutchinson Island in the Indian River Lagoon east of Sebastian, Florida. The sanctuary comprises a 3-acre 12,000 m2 island that involves a supplementary 2.5 acres 10,000 m2 of encompassing water and is located off the east coast of the sunshine state of the Indian River Lagoon. Well-established by an employee order of President Theodore Roosevelt on March 14, 1903, Pelican Island was the first National fauna refuge in the United States. It was produced to preserve regrets and other birds from disappearance through treasure hunting.
